A Matter of Heart – Part II

“Come quickly to the hospital. Rajan has met with an accident. He is critical.” Krish’s words sounded harsh and cruel.

“While skiing, Rajan’s ski had got stuck in a bush and he jerked and flew high up in the air and landed in an awkward position over an another person ski. The person got a bit hurt, but the ski of that person penetrated Rajan’s chest” Krish told as I trembled aghast with the sudden situation.

Their parents arrived by the night, but Rajan was still critical. All of us waited outside the OT. As Dr. Avasthi came out he asked for Rajan’s father, and took him aside. I rushed to them and said “Doctor, my blood group is same as Rajan’s. I can give him as much blood as he needs”

Dr. Avasthi looked at her and then at captain uncle.

“She is his childhood friend” Uncle introduced me.

“Hmm…. But apart from blood, we need something else too.”

“What’s it doc? We will arrange it as soon as possible” Captain uncle replied desperately.
“It would be difficult to arrange. And we don’t have much time. But we have spread the message. let’s see.”

“But what is it that is needed?”

“The ski had damaged Rajan’s heart. Within 10 hours we will need to replace it.”

By the time everybody else had also gathered. Nobody seemed to have understood a word.

“He needs a heart!” This time Dr. Avasthi made it clear.

Everybody’s heart beat stopped for few seconds.

A dark shadow covered our faces.

Aunt Richa broke into a hysteria. My mom tried consoling her.

“Take my heart out doc. He is my son. My heart beats for him only.” She told the doctor sobbing aloud.

“We can’t take a living person’s heart. We need to find a person who just died nearby.”

My legs froze, but I wanted to leave the place as soon as possible. I sneaked a look at my mom. She looked sad and worried. But someone was looking at me intently, I felt a strong vibe. It was Krish’s. He was quiet, but numerous questions floated in his eyes. Questions that only I had answers to. Unable to stand I rushed towards the wash room and slumped on a bench just outside. Krish came and sat beside me. For minutes, none of us spoke.

And then Krish placed his warm hand over mine and said softly “Sweetheart, It’s your decision absolutely. And if you decide otherwise, it would be absolutely all right and justified on your part. But, just for once I want you to think about it.”

“I am special. My extra heart is special.” I said, looking at the opposite wall.

It had a painting of modern art in it. I seldom understood modern art but I liked this painting. It looked like a spiral of colors that went round and round towards a tiny hole in the middle. I kept tracing the colors, hoping to reach the center and then down the hole from where I would slip to an unknown world, where no one would ask me to donate anything.

“You are. But not because of your extra heart. It is just a result of an accidental mutation. But you as an individual is outstanding in your own way. And you would remain so to me always.” Krish replied.

He too now looked at the painting. And I felt he is pulling me out of the funnel. My parents too, by the time found us.

“Whatever you decide, we are with you” They said hugging me tight.

I realized, I need nothing extra. I had a lot.

“Doctor “I almost shouted as I saw him passing through that area.

Dr. Avasthi looked at me inquisitively. So did others.

“You can take my heart. I have two.”

“How are you feeling now my lion-hearted lady?” Doctor Avashti’s voice took me out of the reverie.

“I am fine. How is Rajan doing?”

“He is doing wonderful. The operation is successful and we hope that soon your heart will get adjusted in his body. “

“That’s good news doctor. “

“Yes it is. But you too need to be a bit careful for some days. And your mother said you want to consult a plastic surgeon for the scar. I will check and get her an appointment with the best surgeon in Delhi.” He said looking at my mother.

“Ummm…. leave it doctor. I don’t need it anymore. “

“But why? you only asked me!” My mother was surprised at my sudden denial.

“Yeah! but, actually I want to keep the scar mom. It will remind me that at least I have done one thing worthwhile in my life. “I replied with a smile.

“You are indeed an amazing person Eisha! God had indeed chosen you for this special gift wisely”

Krish entered as the doctor Avasthi left.

“Are you sad?” He asked.

“No not exactly! I am just feeling a bit empty here” I gestured towards my chest

“I can understand. But don’t worry. I will fill it up with loads of love.” Krish said pressing my hand warmly.

“No. Not you. This is exclusively our right. Beta, we both will see that, that part of your body never feels empty. We would keep it filled with love. We actually have no other way of repaying you.” Uncle and Richa auntie entered the room and sat beside her crying profusely, but smiling at the same time.

“Please do not say like that uncle. Rajan is my best friend. And anyways, everybody was after it for long. I thought it would rather be safe with my best friend. “I laughed out at my joke, but sobered as I saw tears in every pair of eyes present in that room.

I felt special, in a way I had never before. They were crying for me. Each tear had respect, love and warmth in them. I felt the tears gathering into a stream and bathing her clean and pure and beautiful. I wanted to meet Rajan.

After two days Krish took me to his room in a wheelchair. Rajan was there all wired with pipes. The nurse tilted his headboard up as I approached his bed. He looked at me and burst into tears. This time I too cried. Holding hands, we remained in that state for few minutes.  It was Rajan who spoke first.

“Krish! I am sorry dear. I never thought my own words would go true like this. And Eisha I dont think I wold ever be able to pay you back the sacrifice you made for me. But I am worried about one thing.” Rajan said making a sad and worried face.

Krish and I looked at him questioningly.

“What if your heart starts beating for a man?”
